For my writing portfolio I am including a review of Damien Hirst, this is just the first part of it, would appreciate if you read it and gave some suggestions into how it's written? I don't want a debate on Damien Hirst, just on the style of writing used. thanks :)
For a piece of art to be meaningful, captivating and ultimately, worth looking at, it should touch the viewer in some way, appeal to a memory, feeling or idea. At least, that’s what I’ve learnt during hours in the school art block, half-heartedly listening whilst picking paint of the desks. Yet when I visited a collection of the work of Damien Hirst at The Tate Gallery, the word that was reverberating through my mind, and many of my baffled peers’ too, I suspect, was ‘What?’. You see, we had just visited the Turner exhibition; pools of pastels intoxicatingly dreamlike, bringing me back to fairytales and myths from my guyhood. I left the exhibition in a trance-like state, so affected I was by the colours and intricacies of Turner’s work. Corny as I feel saying, and writing it, I’d felt connected to the paintings, as if Turner was dreaming as I was, when painting them. Damien Hirst however, was not.
A dead sheep. Basic school science lab objects presented in glass cases. A canvas decorated with systematic round coloured dots (which I later learned were not even painted by Hirst). Somehow these modern day works of art paled in comparison with Turner. You can’t dream about a dot, can you? A dot to me is Twister, Dalmatians, staring at a light for too long. Somehow I find it difficult to believe Hirst was trying to bring back lazy afternoons watching cartoons all day to bored schoolgirls. You can’t get lost in a dot, you can’t try to imagine what the artist was thinking or feeling when they painted it in a dot, and I certainly wouldn’t pay a six figure sum for a dot, especially in the case of Damien Hirst, who seemed to have found the task of painting for his recognition simply too much to bear, employing people to paint his magnificent ponderings for him. What makes me dislike the work even more, is the very fact that he doesn’t understand his own work. In his own words; ‘It’s about life and death and all that stuff.’ Prove me wrong, Damien Hirst, but if you don’t have a clue what your art is trying to say, everyone else just may be puzzled too. | | Good job creating an arch, from school to museums, and tying in art history, but you should be a little more researched in your writing, perhaps pointing to the dada movement for a little more credibility. I think that you could write longer sentences with less commas that would make it a little easier on the reader. |
